Perimeter AI

Home security app
Project Overview
Perimeter is an exclusive groundbreaking long-range ground sensor technology that detects home intruders.

My team’s challenge was to build an interface to interact with the system, as well as design and build an app that could be used by beta users.
My Contributions
My role was to work with the design and development team to deliver a functional first version so we could test with real users.

Survey
Before starting we had to take in consideration the highly competitive market populated by well-known brands and products that had years of research and development.

As a result, the first step was to evaluate all available home security apps and devices in order to learn from them.As a team we conducted interviews and surveys to determine the most pressing home security issues and the key features that should be included in the app’s first version.
Define
During research our team found that users needed to be able to easily arm and disarm the system, as well as view live and pre-recorded events.

Our team had ideation workshops and design critiques that helped us gather great visual solutions to create those main features.

Our guiding principles were to notify the user as soon as possible, as well as to demonstrate what the system was doing to deter intruders.

Our team focused on creating an interface that centered on the “arm and disarm” button, which also displayed the status. As soon as the users tap on this this feature, the system begins to defend the property immediately.

When the system is activated the app will monitor the location through a ground sensor device that detects vibrations and warns the users of such events, as well as letting them watch it live through the app.

If the intruder remains on the property's perimeter for more than five seconds, the system goes into alert mode and activates the lights and sirens. This delay was set to avoid false alarms.

The company recognizes how difficult it is to compete with the current multi-billion dollar security companies whose main device is a camera.

As a result, we decided not to emphasize the camera aspect of the product. However, we recognize the importance of displaying a history of all video activities that occurred on the perimeter and have decided to include it in the app. So the user can simply swipe up to view all of the videos that have been recorded.
Design System
We have designed both natively for the Android and iOS platforms following their guidelines. That was an interesting learning process because each one of them influenced the design decisions and the creation of the components.
Results & Impact
Our team delivered a beta version that was tested and proved compatible with all of the installed devices, which ensured everything was operational.

We sold the first lot of devices with this beta version, and in order to improve the system, we solicited feedback from actual users.Overall, my team and I received very positive responses from those early adopters.
Learnings
It was an honor to work on this project with such talented individuals, including researchers, developers, and motion designer.

I discovered that workshops and design critiques were critical in bringing team ideas together to pursue the same goal but from different perspectives.

I also learned a lot about market strategy because I created the website (entirely in webflow) to sell not only the product, but a brand new solution for the ancient problem that is home security.

Let's work together
